In collaboration with Downtown Indy, GANGGANG is managing the In the Mix, a program that creates opportunities for Black-owned small businesses to start or expand retail operations in downtown Indianapolis. GANGGANG’s role in 2023 and 2024 is to identify, recruit, and develop relationships with 6 Black-owned creative businesses who are ready for a first or second retail space downtown, brokering resources and relationships to open at least 3 more (Nap or Nothing already in place) permanent retail locations downtown.
Expanding the footprint of creative Black-owned businesses in downtown Indy

There are not enough Black-owned businesses downtown.
In downtown Indianapolis – the primary business district of the 17th largest city in the United States – there is a disproportionately small amount of Black-owned businesses. It is more difficult for Black Americans to start a business that is founded in historically racist and inequitable systems. Numerous factors contribute to this disparity, including lack of access to capital and formal support.
Furthermore, Black business owners also lack equal lifelong opportunities for training, education, coaching, mentoring, and other learning opportunities that increase a person’s ability to succeed in business and ensure the long-term sustainability of their endeavors.

GANGGANG is putting Black entrepreneurs in the mix.
GANGGANG’s In the Mix initiative addresses the limited opportunities for Black Americans to succeed in small businesses ownership, specifically in the creative economy. Our mission is to expand the footprint of creative Black-owned businesses in downtown Indianapolis by leveraging real estate expertise and models for equity and business sustainability.
With this work, In the Mix strives for downtown Indy to become a creative hub where Black-owned creative businesses are abundant and thriving, leading to an interconnected ecosystem of Black creativity and the development of generational wealth.
